Gerard Green, Trevor Ferguson, Bob Edgar and captain Joshua Green lifted the Carillon Fours trophy, after surprising everyone.
That included themselves.
Bob Edgar was a late inclusion to the team, after the death of team member Aidren Todd the previous week.
Joshua Green said his death played a key role in his team’s win.
“It was in the back of our minds during the tournament,” he said.
“We’ve played together [as a team] for a couple of years and it’s the first time I’ve won a trophy with my father [Gerard].”
Fifty-two teams from across New South Wales made the journey to Bathurst, including state and national representatives.
The tournament was played in a round robin format, with every team playing five other teams.
The result was awarded to the Lawson team after they had a differential of plus 32 shots, after two other teams finished with five wins apiece.
“This tournament has got a long history and the win was thrilling,” Green said.
“We didn’t expect to win, with the amount of quality here.”
The champions played their matches against teams from Belrose, Ettalong, Terrigal, Orange-Molong (joint team) and Bathurst.
“Belrose and Ettalong didn’t have their best players, but they done well.
“Terrigal are a first grade team and we just got over them.
“That set us up nicely, with three wins going into Sunday.”
The Lawson club sent three teams on the down, with one of their teams managing seventh position.
“The Blue Mountains have never been considered a strength in bowling, but we’re a club on the rise.
“Lawson are improving and we’ve won some state pennant tournaments in recent times.”
The winners picked up a handy $4000 cash prize, but Green said it had little to do with the money.
“The biggest reward is getting your name on the trophy, where other names that have represented Australia at the Commonwealth Games listed next to yours,” he said.
“The win was really satisfying and it’s also good to represent your club.”
Second place went to a Walgett & District Bowling Club team – captain Jason Tighe, Allan Sharpe, Ed Sharpe and Al Tighe – who picked up $2000, finishing with five wins plus 17 shots.
Third place went to a Bathurst City Community Club team – captain Ross James, Bryan Bloomfield, Geoff Thorne and Bob Lindsay – who collected a prize of $1400, after they finished with five wins plus 16 shots.
