The cadets from Denison College’s Kelso High campus had an intensive week of training that gave them an insight into the role of SES volunteers.

During the week cadets had the chance to perform the role of a rescue worker at a car accident, hear about flood boat rescues and meet other emergency service personnel.

Friday’s final day of training was at Chifley Dam and involved a range of scenarios.

SES volunteers Charles Milne and Callum Cope instructed the cadets on how to perform USAR (Urban Search and Rescue) call outs.

“This type of training allows us to assist in searches where there has been a building collapse,” Bathurst SES Unit volunteer Joel Ogston said.

Cadet teams were also tasked to navigate a maze, heard about water safety and the SES’ use of boats during flood rescues.

A line search was conducted to locate a casualty and bring them to safety.
