Of the 11 submissions concerning Troy Tilley’s plans to relocate the Devine Gallery from George Street, just one opposed the plan.
The development application lodged with council would see 106 George Street fitted out to include six tattoo studios within the complex, with kitchen and toilet facilities at the rear.
The new business would also feature a coffee window which would operate through bi-fold windows at front of the premises along William Street.
In support of small businesses and in favour of encouraging such businesses in all their venture.
- Bathurst Business Chamber president Stacey Whittaker
Royal Society Café owner operator Ashwin Lyons, whose business is adjacent to the proposed parlour, said a tattoo parlour would be out of place in that part of town.
He said the Royal Hotel which houses the café was “one of the most, if not the most, historical building” in Bathurst and was regularly photographed by visitors.
“Would Bathurst want a tattoo parlour to be recognisable on the left side of the photographs from this time on, which would then be a representation of who we are as Bathurstians?” Mr Lyons asked in his submission.
But other submissions were far more supportive.
Bathurst Business Chamber president Stacey Whittaker, whose business Bathurst Real Estate is just two doors up from the proposed tattoo parlour, said Mr Tilley was an established local businessman known for “provding a quality service to local customers”.
“The Bathurst Business Chamber is emphatically in support of small businesses and in favour of encouraging such businesses in all their ventures,” Ms Whittaker wrote.
Luke Bennett said the coffee shop proposed for the front of the parlour would help change the way people see tattoos.
“All too often the prejudice that comes with businesses of an alternative nature are based on unknowledgeable bias,” he wrote. Every effort should be made to break down these social stigmas.”
The DA will be the subject of a discussion forum at Bathurst Regional Council on Wednesday evening.
