Gallery director Richard Perram said 450 people attended the opening night of Brett Whiteley: West of the Divide and the gallery had seen good numbers coming through the doors ever since.
Around 40 pieces from the late Australian artist are on loan to the Bathurst gallery from the Art Gallery of NSW and Brett Whiteley Studio, and Mr Perram said the exhibition could not have come here without an upgrade to the gallery’s air conditioning and climate control systems earlier this year.
“The amount of humidity has to be spot-on in the gallery, especially for a show like this one with so many works on paper,” Mr Perram said.
“They can just deteriorate if the climate control is not right.”
Mr Perram said Bathurst audiences were starting to realise just what a treat it was to have an exhibition like this in town. Brett Whiteley: West of the Divide will continue until January 29.
