The young and the not-so-young of the family gather at this time each year for a photo that gets included in the Christmas cards that get sent out to friends and family members beyond Bathurst.
It’s a nice idea, but it requires a bit of planning to get the final product.
First, members of three households need to organise to be in the one spot at the one time in a (mostly) good mood – which is easier said than done when some of those in the photo are under 10 years old and are full of the yuletide spirit.
Second, the younger members of the family need to decide among themselves which of the adults will be standing near them – or, depending on how old they are, holding them. This usually requires negotiation on all parts.
Finally, a camera needs to be set up on a timer so that everyone has a chance to arrange themselves and be in position before the flash goes off.
Traditionally, the first couple of photos include someone looking at their shoes, rubbing at their face or having an irritated conversation with someone else in the group, though the third or fourth photos are generally usable.
So if it’s all so difficult, why bother? Because flicking through the collected photos is like looking at time-lapse photography, seeing children grow up and hair get more grey.
And because it’s Christmas, of course.
Keep cottage in mind for gifts
AND now to Christmas gifts – and is there any other topic at this time of year?
Parade is told that those looking for a gift that is more personal than something mass-produced from one of the major chains should have a look at Rankin Cottage Crafts.
The Bathurst institution, which operates out of an historic building just down from the police station, has hand-made gifts – including knitwear and knitted toys, fabric bags, embroidered tea towels and painted china – and plenty of Christmas cooking.
It is open 10am to 4pm seven days a week.
