Prior to Christmas Copeland injured a finger on his bowling hand while fielding in the slips for NSW in a Sheffield Shield game against Tasmania.
His finger required surgery, but on Saturday he returned for his first game in more than a month as he lined up with St George.
Taking on NSW Uni in a two-day match at Hurstville Oval, Copeland’s Saints were first in to bat.
Copeland was the star as he made 94 coming in at number five, his knock including 10 boundaries and a pair of sixes. He fell just short of what would have been his third top grade century in the competition and first since season 2013-14 when he was trapped leg before wicket.
Copeland also missed out on the win as after his side declared at 8-286, Uni ran down the required total with three wickets in hand.
His bowling figures were 0-60 off 18 overs.
