Bathurst Regional Council invested $1.5 million to build the world-class facility off the Vale Road.
Councillor Greg Westman, who was one of the driving forces behind the project, said council was sure to build a track that would be capable of holding national and international events.
Less than two months after it opened, it was doing just that.
“It is 12 months since the track held its first event and the track has held several meets at a state level and a round of a national competition,” Cr Westman said.
The track doesn’t go unused when there isn’t high level competition happening, though.
“The track is used constantly throughout the year by Bathurst BMX Club. They train on it two or three nights a week,” Cr Westman said.
He said the track “is one of the best, if not the best track in Australia”, a sentiment that Bathurst BMX Club president Michael Breen can certainly agree with.
“What Mount Panorama is to motorsport, that is what this track is to BMX,” Mr Breen said.
The track is one of only two international standard Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) certified tracks in Australia.
Mr Breen said since the track opened, council has continued to support the facility and in turn the BMX club itself.
“We now have lights in place so we can have these races at night,” he said.
The BMX track will become the stage for national and international events again this year.
It will host the Bathurst Open on February 26 and then Round 3 of the 2017 BMX Nationals Series from March 3 to 5, which includes the Oceania Championships.
“There is already some riders from New Zealand and Japan booked in,” Mr Breen said of the Oceania Championships.
Bathurst will also hold the Grands Assault on the final day of its round of the BMX Nationals Series, which should encourage more participation in the sport from people of varying ages.
