Acting manager of museums Janelle Middleton said as part of the activities, a number of the city’s cultural facilities will be offering free entry to visitors.
The second element to the day is a competition asking people to take their best selfie for their chance to win a $100 Bathurst Buy Local gift card.
Ms Middleton said International Selfie Day, which was started in 2014 in the United Kingdom, aims to encourage more people to visit their local facilities.
“We want our local community to engage with our cultural facilities because they are our best ambassadors; they are the ones who talk to people and bring their family and friends,” she said.
To help people take the best selfies possible, council has organised filters on social media platform Snapchat at all of the facilities involved.
“So when people come in they can use one of the Snapchat filters and take their photos,” Ms Middleton said.
The cultural facilities participating in International Museum Selfie Day are the Australian Fossil and Mineral Museum, National Motor Racing Museum, Chifley Home and the Bathurst Historical Society.
Chifley Home, normally closed on Wednesdays, will open from 10am to 2pm.
Anyone who takes a selfie needs to post it on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram with the hashtag #MuseumSelfie for their chance to win the gift card.
