The man, who did not want to be named, admits he is a “nightmare” to buy gifts for so always asks for Instant Scratch-It tickets on special occasions.
“I’m still a bit in shock. This is surreal. I can’t believe it,” he said.
“I’m a very hard person to buy for so I tell my kids for my birthday and Christmas to buy me scratchies – so this year my daughter did just that for my Christmas gift.”
Initially, he said he didn’t even realise he had won.
“I started scratching the tickets and I won $20 on one, and given it was Christmas I’d had a couple of drinks, so I put them aside and didn’t realise I’d won anything else, but thought I’d better check it again later,” he said.
“It wasn’t until the middle of the next day that I double-checked them and then realised ‘hey, wow there’s a winner here’.”

He had scratched one of four top prizes in the $5 Live the Life Black Instant Scratch-Its ticket and will now receive $1000 in his bank account each week for five years.
The winning ticket was purchased at Silva’s Newsagency on Howick Street, and store manager Vicki Howard said the team was excited to have sold the ticket.
“We love it when our customers win something. We have many prize winning tickets under our belt, including first division lotto,” she said.
“It’s lovely to see someone win something, and for it to go to a father with a family is perfect.”
The man admitted he kept a very close eye on his winning ticket until he could submit his claim.
“I’ve been guarding it, sleeping with it in my pillow case,” he said.
