Nic Broes (97) came up just shy of adding his name to the centurion list while Shane Broes (54) picked up his second half century of the season to see Pat’s finish the day at 6-268.
It continues an excellent run of form for Nic Broes in the Bathurst competition. He has now hit at an average of 67.6 over his past four first grade appearances.
Opener Jeremy Russell (55) also helped get the Saints off to an excellent start against the competition leaders at The Scots School.
Saints’ Matt Fearnley said it was a superb performance from the top of the Pat’s order.
“It was just one of those days where everything went right for us, from the toss right through to the end,” he said.
“Nic Broes is a very traditional, stylish batsman who waits for the bad ball to hit away and keeps out what’s on the stumps. He would have had to have been out there for around 60 overs, so for him to do what he did in that time was amazing.
“Nic’s always had the talent and you don’t really see the full potential in junior players until they step up into first grade. Shane has had a great influence on the juniors in our club with coaching and it’s great that Nic could put on that score with his old man.”
By the time Russell departed Pat’s had moved to 93 runs. The Broes’ then combined to take the score to 209 until Shane was caught.
Nic Broes got within a boundary of a ton but was caught behind off the bowling of James Tristrum.
“Jeremy’s the more aggressive opener. Nic has done his job by feeding the strike and Jeremy’s done his job as well,” Fearnley said.
“Nic is the future of this club at opener, and the fact he’s left-handed is a bonus. His attitude towards his cricket is showing in his scores. He’s worked hard for it.
“Both Nic and Jeremy were dropped, so if those were taken then things might have different, but we’ve never been in this position where we’ve been on top from the start of the day.
“It’s the first time this season we’ve been at 2 for 200 and that’s great to see.”
Ben Parsons will come in for Nick Millar in the second day’s play for Pat’s.
Ryan Peacock will be a valuable addition to the Bulldogs lineup for the second week of action when he returns from Bathurst colts representative duty.
Rugby’s Jameel Qureshi was the best of the bowlers with figures of 3-45 from his 20.5 overs.
Tristrum, Sam Macpherson and Tyler Horton were the other wicket takers for the Bulldogs.
