The annual scholarship winner of the Bathurst Arts Council/ 2BS Youth Arts Award will be announced and one very deserving young person will go home with not only $1000 towards their studies but with their name proclaimed among Bathurst’s very finest.
The Youth Arts Awards are community awards that recognise outstanding young people in our region.
Co-ordinated by the Bathurst Arts Council, the awards acknowledge the work of young people who have distinguished themselves in their particular field of the arts and/ or consistently apply outstanding effort to the arts within their school or community arts organisation.
Nine monthly winners were announced throughout 2016 and, following the annual showcase concert in December, three finalists - Sarah Walls (violin), Will Hazzard (visual art) and Jason Oliver Massey (dance) - are in the running for tomorrow’s top prize.
“The Bathurst Arts Council Youth Arts Award is a brilliant opportunity for aspiring young musicians and artists,” finalist Sarah Wells said.
Luke is off to Tamworth
ONE of the 2016 monthly Youth Arts Award winners, Luke Furbank, is off to Tamworth this week after finishing runner-up in the Fretfest competition for new young singer-songwriters.
I had the privilege of working with Luke and 16 other talented local teenagers last week, working with a team of local theatre professionals to help them write and create a new theatre show with Local Stages at Bathurst Memorial Entertainment Centre.
Luke was part of the group writing original songs, under the expert guidance of Abby Smith.
The musical play 17 Things The Government Doesn’t Want You To Know About The Internet is directed by Nel Kentish and will premiere at BMEC on April 13.
Smith & Jones launch album
ALSO taking on Tamworth, local duo Smith & Jones (Abby Smith, mentioned above, and Sophie Jones) launched their debut album ‘Dark Gives Way’ and first single ‘Baby Blue’ at the Tamworth Country Music Festival last weekend.
It’s wonderful. See facebook.com/SmithandJones.music/
