The first three legs of the five-stage tour have all been taken out by sprinters, Marcel Kittell enjoying a pair of wins while John Degenkolb held off van Rensburg in the 200 kilometre third stage.
Though Dimension Data has had a rider in the top 10 on each of those days, Renshaw had hoped to guide team-mate Mark Cavendish to victory.
“I think in events like this here in Dubai, it’s hard because a lot of teams have a lot of new riders, the first hit out of the year with all the big sprinters,” Renshaw told cyclingnews.
“There was no organisation today, I know Cav and myself kind of got mixed up and lost each other.
“It’s all about trying new things … [but] I still think it’s best to have your sprinter in front and relaxed, but you still have to anticipate that wave when it comes.”
The tour ends February 4.
