However, his contact with the #32 Lago Racing Lamborghini at turn one didn’t end up costing the Carerra Cup Australia champion that spot.
The Porsche driver was able to stay on the pace for the remaining hour of the race and the news soon got better for his team.
A late wipeout from the second-placed Shane Van Gisbergen promoted Campbell’s car into second spot.
It’s the first time Porsche have landed on the podium since the 2013 edition.
Campbell was in the #12 Porsche at the race’s start and finish.
Being in the car for the race’s end was a high pressure situation for Campbell, who was a late addition to the team alongside Patrick Long, Marc Lieb and David Calvert-Jones.
“We had two final stints to go and we were running third at the time. I made a massive mistake there in my final stint. I slipped off the break pedal and it was totally my fault and that cost us a bit of time,” Campbell said.
“Thankfully we were able to get it turned around and continue on with not much damage. I’m very thankful it wasn’t too much worse. It was an up and down day but we ended up coming out on top.”
Porsche were the only manufacturer to end up with two cars inside the top five.
The #912 entry of Liam Talbot, John Martin and Davashen Padayachee finished in fourth.
