Mr Drinkwater’s Hill End Gold and Hill End Hearsay document the historic village from all angles – from the population boom to gold-mining methods to the latter-day characters.
There is also a treasure trove of anecdotes and catchphrases, including “there’s always plenty of fire in an axe or mattock handle” (an invitation to use hard work in cold weather to warm up) and “rain before seven, gone before 11”.
Mr Drinkwater’s most recent project was to map the businesses of the Hill End of the 1870s using the famous Holtermann photographs.
