Bathurst were coming off a good win against the Cowra Golf Club at the Duntryleague in Orange on February 5.
The match-up, played under match play format, was a tight affair.
Ben Mackey managed a 3 and 2 win over Cowra’s Wayne.
“Judging by his opening drive, I thought he was in for a good day,” Bathurst co-captain Darryn Bruce said.
“Julian Curran [of Bathurst] put in the longest drive of the day, against Rob McDonald [of Cowra].
“He [Curran] lost one up and once you get one up in match play, it’s hard to come back.”
In the third match up of the Bathurst versus Cowra tie, Brad Cooke went up against Mark Dickson.
“It was quite even match and the tie was tight until the 11th hole,” Bruce said.
“Brad won with a double bogey, but the overall result didn’t reflect just how close the match was.”
Cooke won the tie 3 and 2.
Co-captain Darrel Bourke had an “easy win” in the fourth tie, chipping and putting his opponent Jacob Moodie to death.
Unfortunately for Bruce, he went down in his tie against Peter Kirwin 4 and 3.
“I knew what I was in for if I didn’t go out and place at my best,” Bruce said.
“It was a pretty close match, but Bathurst won 3 and 2 and it’s a good start and one that we wanted.”
Bruce praised the Duntryleague course, calling it “absolutely lovely” and said it’s getting better and better every year.
In Bathurst’s next outing, at the Cowra Golf Club on February 19, the division one team will face the Forbes Golf Club.
Bruce is set to start talented junior Scott Matheson at number one against Forbes.
“He deserves the position, the way he played last year,” Bruce said.
