The Wanderers took a first half lead through striker Brendon Santalab, in the 26th minute and the team in red and black managed to hold on in controversial circumstances.
Sydney FC will think they deserved a last minute penalty, when Alex Brosque come down in the box after a challenge from Robert Cornthwaite.
The referee waved played on and the Sky Blues hunt for an equaliser ended.
It was the Wanderers first win in the Sydney Derby for 1,134 days.
Grant was booked just after the hour mark, in a game that got physically heated in the last half hour of the match.
Grant and the Sky Blues will look to bounce back when they play glamour boys Melbourne City at AAMI Park on February 24.
