Social Bowls
Rink winners in the Tuesday Social Bowls competition this week were Allan Clark and Bruce Parr 21-19 against Paul Kennedy and Jim Clark, with the lead changing four times in a hard fought match.
The Kennedy team jumped early but the scores were even after the fifth, the 10th and again after the 15th ends so neither side was giving an inch. The Clark team scored a three in the 17th and 20th ends and despite the Kennedy team scoring a three in the last end, it was not enough.
Runners up prize went to John Hobson and John Banning with a 22-19 win over Terry Burke and Bruce Thurgood. With a four in the first the Hobson team declared their intent early and were never headed from there. However, a last three end burst from the Burke team, which included a five on the last end, could have upset the result but they fell short at the line.
In a day of close finishes, the 26-17 win by Tony Hogan, Terry Clark and Daryl Whitton over Tony McNamara, Paul Francis and Bob Bembrick was the exception. The Hogan team scored first then the McNamara team came back with a run of twos to sit 6-2 after the fourth end. By the sixth it was all even but the Hogan team had momentum until the 15th when scores were again even at 16 all. But that was it for the McNamara team scoring just one in the remaining six ends.
Kevin Howard, John Bosson and Phil Cummings scored a 24-18 win over Noel Witney, Tony Jarratt and Dick Ellis, despite the Witney team scoring a six in the 20th end. The Howard team scored on 13 ends to the Witney teams eight, but the lead changed three times before the tenth end, so the pressure was on in the early ends. Unfortunately, the six in the 20th end was not backed up in the early scoring for the Witney team.
Tiger Smith, Barry O’Keefe and Ken Hartwig scored an 18-15 win over Butch Stevens, Barry O’Keefe and Kerry Connors, with the Smith team making an early break to lead 5-0 after the first three ends.
The Smith team response was a five-end run for a 10-point score and a 10-5 lead. By the 17th end the Stevens team had come back and the card was even at 13 all but a two in the last for the Stevens team was not enough.
Emerson Fittipaldi, Bill Gaylard and Frank Farrell scored a 22-20 win over Darrell Bellamy, Ian Dews and Ron McGarry in the final Tuesday match with the lead changing five times.
A four-end run by the Fittipaldi team for 11 points from the 17th end was the difference taking them from 19-9 down to 20-19 lead going into the 21st end. A single point to the Bellamy team in the 21st called for an extra end where the Fittipaldi team scored a two for the win.
A good roll up for Friday Night Twilight bowls with two rinks of triples in play. An early storm threatened play but conditions were perfect by the time bowlers hit the green and a great time was had by all.
The rink winners for the Saturday Afternoon Social Competition were Frank Farrell, Barry O’Keefe, Bruce Parr and Terry Clark with a close 20-19 win over Allan North, Barry O’Keefe, Ian Dews and Tim Pickstone.
The Farrell team jumped with a four in the first and third ends and they were ahead 16-7 by the 12th end. A run of five ends for a score of eight had the North team just one shot behind after the 17th but a three from the Farrell team stopped the charge. By the 21st end it was 19 all with the Farrell team picking up the win in the 22nd end.
Rhys Harvey and Steve Corby collected a 15-13 win over Glen Urza and Butch Stevens after the Urza team took the lead in the seventh end. By the 17th the scores were all even but the Urza team managed two one shot wins while the Harvey team scored two double shot wins to seal the match.
Tony Urza and Barney Lavelle comfortably won at 26-12 over Tony Hogan and Tony Press in a never headed affair. With a three in the third end the Urza team grabbed the lead and with wins in 13 of the 21 ends dominated the card.
Tiger Smith, Peter Martin and Gus Thurgood belted Noel Witney, John Bosson and Steve McGarry 29-9, winning 13 of the ends played. While the Witney team managed to replicate the two in the first end for the Smith team, they didn’t get back on the card until the eighth end but were down 10-2 by that time. A five end run for six points for the Witney team helped, but the 11 shot response from the Smith team sealed the match.
Club Championships
Just the one 2017 Major Pairs Championship match this week and it was a cracker. Derrick Huender and Bob Jenkins won a cliff hanger against Mick Tremain and Craig McIntosh with the scores even after 21 ends requiring an extra end to produce a 17-16 win for the Huender team.
The Huender team held the lead comfortably for the first ten ends when a five-end run for 11 shots gave the Tremain team the lead 15-9 after the 15th and the Huender team needed to regroup and they did. Scoring on six of the final seven ends the Huender team clawed back to secure the tightest of wins.
Twilight Bowls is on again this Friday afternoon at 5.30pm for all comers at Majellan. The Pennant trial games were played this week at the Bathurst City Club and it was a good training run for all players. So, until next time bowlers, remember, “Despite the high cost of living, it remains popular.”
