The Hogs For The Homeless crew, also consisting of NSW Origin representatives Josh Perry, Steve Roach, Paul Sironen, Tim Brasher, Kerry Hemsley and Ian Schubert, made the special appearances and ran rugby league clinics to help drive junior rugby league membership and funds for Father Chris Riley’s Youth off the Streets.
NRL great Brad Fittler said he got involved with Fr Chris Riley’s Youth off the Streets program years ago, when he was playing in the NRL.
“I use to work in the food van in the early 2000s, I was living in the area where Fr Chris was working,” he said.
Working in the food van, he helped feed the homeless, and spent time with kids living rough.
He said he continues to support Fr Chris’ work in the community, because it’s good to get involved.
He said Fr Chris has programs which help teenagers get “a fair go in life” something not every kid gets.
The H4H crew raise money through auctions and raffle tickets, with the first prize winner to receive a 2017 XL 1200CX Roadster Harley-Davidson valued at $19,495.
Fittler, a long-time supporter of Father Chris Riley’s Youth off the Streets, said he hopes to inspire community regions in NSW to help out kids who are doing it tough.
“The Hogs For The Homeless tour is such a rewarding experience and it’s something I look forward to every year,” Fittler said.
“To give back to the community, not only in a football sense, but to help out those who are less fortunate is such a gratifying feeling.
"Sometimes the simple things like meeting people, saying hello and having a conversation can go a long way to inspiring them.
As part of the rider the group will travel more than 4000km in 11 days, making stops in 14 country towns, delivering a rugby league ball to every child along the way.
Since its inception in 2013, Hogs For The Homeless has raised more than $450,000 for Youth off the Streets, whose goal is breaking the cycle of disadvantage, abuse and neglect.
