SDN Hamilton Street Children's Education and Care Centre has had a misting spray system installed over its sandpit that lowers the temperature in that area by up to 10 degrees.
It was installed about three weeks ago and has been a big hit with more than just the centre’s kids, according to centre director Lindy Church.
“When the older children come from school to pick the kids up, they run over to it [the sandpit] to begin with, because they’ve been hot at school all day and they can cool off,” she said.
Ms Church said the system has also fit in well with the centre’s education program, because it has encouraged the children to think about water pressure and how the misting spray operates.
Bathurst’s average maximum temperature of 32.6 degrees last month was well above the long-term January average of 28.4.
The city’s average maximum so far this month is 32.5.
