Tact Tate ($8.40) was kept close to the pegs by Turnbull over the final straight, as the trainer from The Lagoon hoped clear path would emerge for her gelding.
The McArdle x Tact Lizzie gelding spent much of the race four back on the pegs, a position Turnbull expected to find herself around thanks to a second row start.
The win looked certain to be heading the way of last year’s Miracle Mile champion Have Faith In Me ($5.90) or former Three Year Old Breeders Crown victor Major Crocker ($10.30) as the field went inside the final 100m.
No Doctor Needed was sitting in front of Tact Tate in the run for home but peeled to the outside in his search for a better line.
That was the gap Turnbull was waiting for.
With a remarkable turn of foot Tact Tate snuck down the inside of Major Crocker to take his career victory number 14 – one worth $60,000 to Turnbull.
Turnbull said Tact Tate always felt like a winner throughout the running but needed some luck to come his way.
“It was a really good win. I was hoping it would open up for him. I knew once it had opened up that he would get them," she said.
“He felt really good throughout the race because he hadn’t had to do much work. I thought he’d be three back instead of four at the start but I was still happy with that.
“He’s definitely the best horse I’ve had.
“He’s still young. After the way he handled this race it won’t be his last at this level.”
The winning mile rate was 1:53.6.
Saturday’s win at the prestigious Miracle Mile meeting is the second time Tact Tate has claimed Group 1 glory, following victory in the Four Year Old Bonanza in Melton just over a year ago.
Tact Tate has maintained an excellent record in feature staying races.
In December he won the Group 2 Truer Memorial (2,540m) at Bankstown and earlier in the year won the Group 3 Sydney Cup (2,140m).
Saturday’s Miracle Mile (1,609m) was taken out by Lennytheshark.
