Bathurst’s under 16s completed an undefeated season by taking out the Mitchell Cricket Council final against Orange at The Scots School on Sunday.
After losing the toss and being sent out to bowl Bathurst was more than up to the task, removing Orange for 91 runs and chasing down the target with five wickets still in hand.
It was the second time in the competition that Bathurst had managed to bowl out Orange before they could reach triple figures, doing the same in the penultimate round.
Bathurst coach Shane Broes says it’s been a season to remember for the squad.
“To go through the season undefeated was a great effort. The boys have worked very hard throughout the season,” he said.
“When we lost the toss we set ourselves a target of trying to bowl them out for less than 100 again. One of their players [Kaleb Cook] hung around and got 27 … but we were on track after he went.
“To get them all out for 91 was a great effort. We had confidence that we could get them out for under 100 after our last game against Orange. All our bowlers bowled very well.”
The player doing the most damage with the ball for Bathurst was Matt Gault (3-10).
Gault picked up a wicket in his first over of bowling but his day was about to get even better.
In his next over the Bathurst bowler found himself on a hat-trick when he picked up the valuable wicket of Cook followed immediately by Ben Winslade.
While Gault wasn’t able to claim the hat-trick he finished with a double wicket maiden followed by two straight run-less overs.
Brenden Pallier (2-9), Mitch Taylor (1-19), Hugh Parsons (1-17), Nic Broes (1-12) and Jack Goodsell (1-8) picked up Bathurst’s other wickets.
Ben Mitchell was unlucky not to join the wicket-takers club with his ultra economical figures of 0-3 from his seven overs.
Orange were all out after 43 overs.
The home side didn’t get the start they were after in their chase.
The early departures of Bailey Brien (8) and Ben Cant (1) saw Bathurst at 2-11 in the seventh over.
Sam Hall (35 not out) arrived on the scene to get the hosts back on track.
Hall’s entire innings was crafted of just singles and twos in a patient knock.
“His placed his shots to perfection. He picked the gaps well and played a great innings,” coach Broes said of Hall.
Mitchell (14) was the next best of the Bathurst batsmen. He combined with Hall for 21 runs.
Bathurst caught the visitors’ total with more than 16 overs to spare.
The best part about the season for Broes is how similar the 16s squad will be for the 2017-18 campaign.
“We’re only going to lose four guys out of this most. Most of our core will be back so that’s good signs for next season,” he said.
Bathurst’s under 16s finished the season with six wins from as many matches.
In a show of how strong their 2016-17 was, Sunday’s result was the closest a team had come throughout the competition to knocking Bathurst off their perch.
