As the Kelso roadworks near completion, a new lane of traffic in each direction was recently opened up to motorists.
A Roads and Maritime Services spokeswoman said the huge upgrade was progressing as planned.
“Work on the $85 million project to reduce congestion and improve safety on the Great Western Highway at Kelso is on track to be completed by mid-2017,” she said.
“Traffic was moved on to the last of the new lanes last week. However, line marking and other final work is yet to be completed.”
Work on the highway upgrade began in October 2014 following extensive research by the RMS.

Meanwhile, Roads Minister Melinda Pavey acknowledged community concerns that the Lee Street diversion would be closed for good later this month.
She said the level crossing on Lee Street was only ever intended as a temporary measure and its purpose has been fulfilled.
And, Ms Pavey added that once the upgrade is complete, the second crossing across the railway won’t be needed, as the dual highway will be adequate to carry traffic volumes.
