Only Nick North (36:42) and Dean Windsor (38:58) beat home Watts (40:28) over the 300 metre swim, 16km bike and 2.5km run legs.
In the battle for the women’s minor placings Danielle Patterson (49:14) kept herself clear of an intense three way battle between eventual third place finisher Emma Dasey (49:39), Morgan Watts (49:43) and Caitlin Lovett (49:47).
Making victory all the sweeter for Watts was the announcement post-race that she had earned the overall club champion title for the 2016-17 season.
Watts said it took a while to get some rhythm but enjoyed her time on course once the bike leg arrived.
“I felt really good considering what I had done over the week with Nationals and Oceanias [Track Cycling Championships] in Canberra. On the swim my legs were saying ‘Hang on, this isn’t cycling anymore. Why aren’t we moving in circles?’ so I had to pace myself a bit on the swim,” she said.
“I got onto the bike and my legs said ‘Now this is what I like’ and I felt great. I’ve never felt that good on a bike ride in a triathlon before. Then on the run it wasn’t the five kilometres that I normally do over the long course so I was able to go a little harder.”
Emily Watts also claimed the female long course champion award from the Wallabies club for 2016-17, while Morgan Watts won the short course title.
