Social Bowls: Rink winners for this week’s Tuesday Social Bowls competition were Allan Clark, Bill Gaylard and Jim Clark with a 19-16 score over Ken McNamara, Gus Thurgood and Ken Hartwig after a very slow start and a final end win. An early jump had the McNamara team at 3-0 after the second end and they were 7-1 in front after the fifth end. By the 13th end the scores were even at nine all and 16 all after 21st end, but a three on the last for the Clark team made the difference.
Tony McNamara and Paul Francis scored a comfortable 27-13 win over Kerry Connors and Tim Pickstone in a lead from the front performance. By the 10th end, the McNamara team were in front 17-1 and the Connors team didn’t hit double figures until they scored a four in the 20th end. Tony Hogan, Ian Dews and Keith Pender collected a 20-16 win over Paul Kennedy, Bob Bembrick and John Banning after jumping from the blocks with a four to get things underway. From there they maintained their lead despite a strong finish by the Kennedy team.
John Hobson, Bruce Parr and Frank Farrell with a score of 19-14 defeated Ted Summerfield, Peter Martin and Darrell Bellamy, despite the Summerfield team winning the first four ends. By the seventh it was all even at four all, but a five for the Summerfield team in the eighth pushed them to 9-4 and this seemed to encourage action from the Hobson team. By the 14th end it was all even at 11 all but the Hobson team lost just three of the next seven ends to win comfortably.
Friday Twilight Bowls saw two rinks in action with Betsey Thornberry, Peter Zylstra and Jenny Press scoring a 12-9 win over Pauline Clark, Peter Zylstra and Val Zylstra over 14 ends. Allan Clark and Tim Pickstone scored a 16-7 win over Tony Press and Ron Weal over 11 ends and both rinks stayed on for drinks and a BBQ. Saturday afternoon social competition numbers were down due to Pennants commitments. However, John Hobson, Peter Zylstra and Tim Pickstone scored a 25-18 win over Tiger Smith, John Boson and Jim Patton after the Smith team scored a three on the first end. By the fourth end the Hobson team had a 9-3 lead and they maintained it to the finish.
Trevor Pallister and Terry Clarke had a 26-21 win over Barney Lavelle and Ron McGarry jumping from the blocks with a two and three before the Lavelle team scored first points. The scores were even after the ninth end and the Pallister team were down 14-11 after the 13th end, but from here they picked up their game to score on seven of the next nine ends.
Pennants and Club Championships: Mick McDonald and Tony McNamara scored a hard fought 20-17 win over Allan Clark and Frank Farrell in a 2017 Major Pairs Championship match with the scores even after the second, ninth, 11th, 13th and 16th ends. A six in the 18th end by the McDonald team pushed their lead out to 20-12 and the Clark team were simply not able to close the gap.
Glen and Tony Urza teamed up to defeat Ted Stretton and Peter Drew 28-12 in another 2017 Major Pairs Championship match and then took out the daily rink prize for good measure. The Stretton team scored first, however a four-end run for 16 points, which included an eight-shot end win, from the second end by the Urza team gave them a 16-1 lead after the fifth and things were looking very ugly for the Stretton team. By the 20th end it was all over.
A 2017 Minor Singles Championship match saw Peter Drew score a 31-16 win over Terry Clark after 26 ends. Drew grabbed the early running with a four-nil lead after the third end and he maintained the pressure throughout the remainder of the match, wining 16 ends in total.
