National broadband network (NBN) cables are being installed around the city, with the project to be completed by September.
Bathurst will be one of the last regional cities to receive the NBN after a national roll-out that commenced in 2013.
“The rollout of the NBN network is well underway in Bathurst with construction taking place to connect more than 15,300 local homes and businesses,” spokesperson Marcela Balart said.
“It is expected people will be able to progressively make the switch from mid this year.
“This is terrific news for Bathurst, as it means the entire community will be fully connected to the NBN network once construction is complete.”
More than 2300 residents and businesses on the outskirts of Bathurst - including Orton Park, Glanmire and Eglinton can already connect to the NBN through fixed wireless technology.
Many homes are also eligible to connect to the NBN through the Sky Muster satellite service.
Ms Balart said the switch to the NBN was not automatic.
“The best thing for people to do is to check their address on the NBN website to find out when they will be eligible to make the switch,” she said.
“They can also register their email to be notified when they can order an NBN service.”
Once eligible to connect, people will need to contact their preferred phone or internet provider to discuss their needs, choose a suitable broadband package and arrange to make the switch.
Nationally, more than four million Australian homes and businesses are able to connect to the NBN, with more than 1.36 million of those in NSW.
