Social Bowls: Tony McNamara, Bill Gaylard and John Banning took the daily rink and game win with an 18-16 score over Noel Witney, Mick Redfern and John Bosson but a late charge almost saw an upset. The McNamara team were 6-0 before the Witney team scored first points in the fourth end, and by the 16th end the McNamara team were ahead 18-9 and looking home for all money. The Witney team took every end from there and missed the win by just three shots. Peter Naylor and Tim Pickstone scored a 28-14 win over Allan Clark and Ron McGarry after jumping from the blocks with a three and one, but it was even after the Clark team’s first score was a four. It was five all after the fifth, but the Naylor team scored wins on all but one end from the seventh to the 14th to put them at 23-10 and that was it for the Clark team.
Tiger Smith and Paul Francis scored a 25-17 win over John Hobson and Kevin Howard but it was anybody’s game until the 15th end. A run of four ends for eight points put the Smith team in front 24-15 after the 18th and the Hobson team could not pull the lead back from there. Paul Kennedy, Dick Ellis and Gus Thurgood collected what finished being a comfortable 30-21 win over Terry Clark, Peter Morton and Jim Clark, but not before the Clark team lead was 13-1 after the seventh end. From this point the Kennedy team began to play and in a five-end run had the score and their lead out to 16-13 but a five on the next end by the Clark team put them in front again by two but they were out of puff. The Kennedy team scored on all but one of the last six ends for a total of 14 to come home pulling up.
Friday night Twilights saw two games of pairs with the Press family up against the Pickstone family with the Press pairing taking the win. On the other rink Ron McGarry and Betsey Thornberry teamed up to win against Merle Stephens and Lyn McGarry with all players enjoying the roll up. Saturday social competition attracted three rinks of triples with Allan Clark, Tim Pickstone and Terry Clark collecting the daily rink and game win 29-12 over Butch Stevens, Ian Dews and Barney Lavelle after the Stevens team led out with a one and three in the first two ends. The scores were even after seven ends at eight all, but the Clark team were too strong and left the Stevens team in their wake.
In a game that saw the lead change four times, Tiger Smith, Ron McGarry and Frank Farrell scored a 23-19 win over Tony Hogan, Roger Cooper and Trevor Pallister. The Hogan team were in front 10-1 after the sixth end and looked in control but the Smith team kept plugging away and by the 15th end they took a one-shot lead. By the 17th end it was even at 18 all but the Smith team scored a two and then closed out the match with a one then two on the last end. The Terry Burke, Tony Press and Gus Thurgood combination proved too strong with a 21-16 score over Ken Hartwig, Bruce Parr and Darrell Bellamy despite the Hartwig team leading after three ends. By the sixth end the Burke team were in front and never let go of the advantage with a lead of 20-11 after the 16th end they cruised home.
Pennants and Club Championships: David Joss scored a strong 31-25 win in the first round of the B Singles against Kerry Connors with the lead changing four times through the match which reached 37 ends. A four in the 35th end by Connors almost caused an upset as concentration levels proved difficult to maintain, but Josh was able to hang on to score a two in the last for the win. In a Semi Final of the 2017 Pairs Championship Glen and Tony Urza combined to defeat Peter Naylor and Steve Corby 20-16. The Naylor team pushed out to 12-7 after the 12th end, but the Urza team responded well to put them in front 19-12 after the 17th and the Naylor team were running out of ends. Despite the Naylor team winning three of the last four ends it was not enough and the Urza Brothers won comfortably.
The third round of the District Pennants tournament this week saw the Fours away at Manildra where the locals scored a three-rink clean sweep of the Majellan team. With three rounds to play, Majellan, Manildra and Wallerawang are separated by just the one point making for a close run to the finish line. The Majellan Sixes played at the Bathurst City Club and despite winning well on two rinks, the third rink was severely dealt with by the City Club Bowlers and the overall result went to Bathurst City. With Majellan now just one win from three rounds, they will have their work cut out in the run to the flag. The draw for both teams for the coming weekend is on the notice board.
Nominations are being called for the return leg of the Wallerawang/Majellan Club Challenge on April 30 and on April 17 a Mixed Triples Friendship Day to be held at the Bathurst City Club. It is very pleasing to announce that the Department of Sport and Recreation has provided yet another grant to the Majellan Bowling Club to enable the purchase of a new greens roller to help maintain our greens in the best possible fashion.
