Students at Cathedral School took part in a range of fire safety lessons on Wednesday, thanks to crews from Bathurst’s Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) station.
FRNSW Senior Firefighter Mal Bird was among those who delivered the training and said it gave students vital tips about fires.
“Fire and Rescue NSW has a range of fire safety and educational programs that we deliver through schools across the state,” he said.
“These programs are tailored for varying key stages.”
The FRNSW visit to Cathedral School was to deliver the Stage 1 Fire Safety Program to kindergarten and Year 1 students.
The overall aim of the fire education program was to reduce the frequency and severity of the tragedy and trauma caused by fires that can have lasting effects on young children.

“The overall aim of the fire education program was to reduce the frequency and severity of the tragedy and trauma caused by fires that can have lasting effects on young children,” Senior Firefighter Bird said.
“The program covers topics including ‘stop, drop, cover and roll’, how to ‘get down low and go, go, go’, and the importance of a home fire escape plan.”
Senior Firefighter Bird said the ongoing program was a success thanks to the co-operation and support from local schools, and training would also be conducted at other schools.
