NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) say the burn will take place around the Burraga Primary School on Burraga Road.

NSW RFS Superintendent Greg Sim said the hazard reduction will start on the afternoon of Wednesday, March 29 and continue through until Thursday.

The hazard reduction is due to finish by 6pm on Friday, March 31.

“Hazard reduction plays a vital role in helping to reduce the intensity of bush fires,” Superintendent Sim said.

“The controlled burn will help protect Burraga properties and assets as well as assist our fire fighters to control any future bushfires or grass fires in the area.

“This operation is an important part of our Bushfire Risk Management Plan for the area and there will be further controlled burns in Black Springs, Trunkey Creek, Hill End, Hartley, Capertee and Jeremy in the near future.”

Superintendent Sim said it was important to take advantage of suitable weather conditions to conduct hazard reduction burning as soon as they occur.

“Each year only a small window of opportunity exists where weather conditions are conducive to controlled burns,” he said.

“For a hazard reduction burn to be successful, we require the right wind and temperature conditions as well as ground fuels to be sufficiently dry.

“We advise residents in Burraga to take appropriate precautions, such as keeping doors and windows closed, removing washing from clothes lines and making sure pets are in a protected area.

“Motorists in the area should also slow down and take care if driving through smoke, keep the windows up, switch the car air-conditioner to re-circulated air mode and turn headlights on.”
