The Bathurst team not only picked up 13 first place finishes at the competition but as a group finished second overall on the points tally.
Hickey, as coach, said his group couldn’t be more deserving of their achievements.
They have all done a great job. They’ve put a lot of work in to get ready for it.

“They have all done a great job. They’ve put a lot of work in to get ready for it,” he said.
“They’ve practiced across different classes to prepare them for the different events, and they’ve continued to work on it at home.
“I’ve got a lot of kids in the beginners divisions who are really starting to fire. There’s some who were struggling to win their first matches and now they’re finishing inside the top three.
“That’s because they’re not as nervous as they used to be and they’re starting to believe that they can win.”
Impressively, the great results for the Bathurst dojo were spread across a range of disciplines.
Keelan Ruston-Walkom enjoyed the strongest list of results with victory in kata, point sparring and weapons kata.
Point sparring was a great discipline for the group, with victories to Abby Breen, Tyler Breen and Naz O’Connor – who also finished first in kata.
Other winners included Kiara Blattman (weapons), Tegan Gibbons (sword combat), Brittany Reece (kata), Hannah Gibbons (kata) and Jacob McGovern (sumo and sword combat).
Completing the list of top three finishers were Neesha Ward, Beau Blattman, Micayla Asimus, Dean Asimus, Zach Ruston-Walkom and Chole Gibbons.
“We now have State Championships coming up in Liverpool on May 28 and we’ve got our preparation for that underway,” Hickey said.
