Bathurst’s Michael Anderson is geared up for a new Kumho V8 Supercars season and is aiming to get his year off to a winning start at Phillip Island this weekend.
Anderson arrived on the scene with a bang last year as he finished second in the privateer class and seventh overall.
His excellent 2016 included round victories at Winton and Sydney.
Anderson finished the year with a haul of 430 points. Only Jim Pollicina (578) kept Anderson off the top spot.
Now’s the Bathurst driver has upgraded his machine in his bid to go one spot higher in his class.
Anderson has upgraded from his ex-Mark Winterbottom BF Falcon to a Supercars Development Series-winning car in Cam Waters’ 2015 FG Falcon.
The car has a strong list of results to its name.
In last year’s Kumho Series the car won three races plus the round at Phillip Island, and went on to win the Sydney Motorsport Park finale for Matthew White Racing, in the hands of Garry Jacobson.
Prior to that the car had been in the hands of some big names.
It was raced by Paul Dumbrell and Steve Richards in V8 Supercars and gave the former his first career win in the series (Sandown 2010).
Chaz Mostert was also behind the wheel of the car in the 2012 Supercars Development Series.
The striking orange, yellow, silver and black paint scheme is bound to turn heads on the track this year, but Anderson also wants to let his driving achieve the same effect.
“I’m extremely happy to have this car. It’s been the spare car for the Prodrive team in the past,” he said.
“Last year we had a fantastic season, with round wins and podiums, and claimed second in the championship for privateers. We’ll look to go one better this year.
“The car has been prepared perfectly and, strangely for Phillip Island, it’s looking like well have a good, clear weekend of weather.
“There’s some tough competition again. Two-time champions Eggleston Motorsport are back in it this year, and there’s drivers formerly from the development series and Australian GT.”
This weekend will be one of three rounds this year where the Kumho series will run alongside the top-tier Supercars competition.
The remainder of the series will take place at Winton (May 19-21), Queensland Raceway (July 28-30), return to Phillip Island (September 8-10) then conclude at Sydney Motorsport Park (October 27-29).
