Australia has been marking 100 years since the country’s involvement in World War One, honouring the service of all Australian men and women who have served the nation in all kinds of conflicts around the world.
The commemorations, which began in 2014, aim to improve the community’s understanding and awareness of Australia’s wartime history, particularly for younger Australians.
Various anniversary memorials will be held around Australia and in other countries around the world during the coming months.
On June 4, the Bomber Command Memorial, at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, will host the 75th anniversary of the Bomber Command Operations.
As well, the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Milne Bay will be commemorated at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra on August 25.
The 100th anniversary of the Battle of Polygon Wood will be commemorated in the Belgian town of Ypres on September 26.
On October 23, the Centenary of Anzac will host a memorial service to mark the 75th anniversary of the Battle of El Alamein and the culmination of the North Africa campaigns. The service will be held at the Australian War Memorial.
The 100th anniversary of the Capture of Be’er Sheva will be held on October 31 in the Israeli city of Be’er Sheva and the 75th anniversary of the Kokoda and the Beachheads will be held at the Australian War Memorial on November 2.
