A roundabout is long overdue at intersection
AS a Bathurst citizen who has had extremely close contact with the Mitre/Lambert/Suttor intersection over more than 50 years, I would like to venture my opinion.

My mother’s house was in Coral Way from the late 1950s until her death in 1974.
My mother minded my son for almost five years in the 1960s and 1970s while I went to work. That entailed two trips each day to the area in question. Even in those days I felt the trip was quite a hazardous one and always proceeded cautiously - even timidly.
These days it is even more so.
People travelling to West Bathurst Public School, the Assumption School, the Duration Cottages, the cemetery, Westpoint Shopping Centre, the RMS, the old Scout Hall, the tennis courts, the basketball stadium, Bathurst Jail and Windradyne are up and down there constantly every day (I also remember when this was the access to the old Bathurst tip).
People living in those previously mentioned locations would most likely do their journeys in reverse. Buses for both the schools, and probably for Bathurst High School as well, are very obvious at school commencement and finishing times, as are the regular/hourly passenger buses.
The fire brigade in Suttor Street certainly needs no hold-ups on this intersection whenever it is called out urgently!
I can’t understand why Councillor Warren Aubin believes this intersection is only busy twice a day, i.e. for pupils of the Assumption School, because I have witnessed a steady stream in several directions at all times of the day.
One of my friends had an accident on this intersection a while ago. She wasn’t hurt physically too badly, but she was extremely shaken and nervous and soon she needed to go into a nursing home.
I always used to wonder when the intersection in question was finally going to have a roundabout when so many intersections in downtown Bathurst got their roundabouts.
Why not this one?
I feel there is a real need just here. And this need should be filled immediately.

Swift response to problems is a real credit to council
THE article “Potholes are a team effort to get fixed” (April 24) was a most timely reminder for me to contact council about the major defects in McKenzie Place, Bathurst.
While I have notified council on numerous maintenance issues and never received a negative response, I have been most lax in my reporting of major defects with my own street, problems which have existed for several months. (Laziness comes to mind.)
After seeing your report on council wanting public input, it spurred me into action. On Monday I placed a maintenance request for road repairs to McKenzie Place and already, just four days later, a large repair team with numerous pieces of road repair equipment was feverishly working away.
Well done to the acting director of engineering services who was the recipient of my request. I might also add that the acting director replied to my request by email within a few hours.
Congratulations to both council and the Advocate.
