But just as pleasing for the handcyclist was seeing the growth of the fields over the last 12 months.
Over the two-day event 48 cyclists – more than a dozen of them newcomers at nationals – contested 26 titles.
“It’s really encouraging actually, it was the largest field I’ve seen since I’ve started … I hope the numbers keep growing,” Miller told Cycling Australia.
Miller was the only female competing in the H1 handcycle category and as such, was assured of victory in both Friday’s time trial and Saturday’s road race if she finished.
But the Western Region Academy of Sport athlete still had goals – she wanted to clock good average speeds.
In claiming gold in the 10 kilometre time trial that featured a testing 8km climb to the finish line, Miller averaged 14.7km/hr.
“It’s a nice reward for putting in all the hard work at training, but not only for me, but my coach and the support staff around me,” she said.
“I think the conditions were pretty tough for everyone, I think everyone did really well.”
In Saturday’s road race, Miller averaged 12.7km/hr for her lap of the 18km course. She clocked a time of one hour, 27 minutes, 33 seconds.
“[I want to] Keep improving and see where it takes me and hopefully I can come back here again next year,” she said.
