As a BMX New South Wales event, the Penrith Open attracted a quality fields and provided stiff competition for the Bathurst riders.
“Every open meet attracts elite riders from the state … it was a pretty good standard,” Wolfenden said.
“The Penrith track is a lot smaller than Bathurst, but in saying that, it’s a pretty technical type track still and it’s got a pro straight that sorts out some of the pro men.”
Riding in the 17-24 men’s division, Goulding won each of his three motos to earn a spot in the final. He also clocked the fastest run in his second moto, a 37.793 seconds effort.
In the final Goulding (37.876) held off Penrith duo Jay Martin (38.381) and Reece Adorini (39.338) to claim the spoils.
He and Adorini were neck-and-neck early in the run, but when the Penrith rider was caught underneath him on the second turn then had to veer high up on the track to avoid a collision, it allowed Goulding to pull clear.
“It’s pretty cool to see Joel winning his first finals this year,” Wolfenden said.
“He has to step up on the track that we’ve got in Bathurst and now he’s starting to win finals everywhere else.”
Wolfenden rode in the women’s 17-24 age group and after winning her three motos, went on to clock a 41.882 seconds run in the final for a comfortable win ahead of Macarthur rider Ashlee Osborne (42.784) and Lake Macquarie’s Kaitlin Budden (44.005).
A strong start saw her lead down the first straight and into turn one and from there Wolfenden was never threatened.
“The next person in run was about a second behind me, it was pretty good,” she said.
Wolfenden and Goulding were not the only members of the Bathurst BMX Club to compete at the Penrith Open.
Jett Robertson placed sixth in the 11-12 boys cruiser final, while Chelsie Westman was runner-up in her 13 girls decider after making a passing move through the last turn. Both Wyatt Robertson and Jack Murray raced in the eight years boys division.
The next major event for the Bathurst BMX Club riders will be a pre-state event at Macarthur on June 10-11. The NSW titles will be held on the last weekend of September.
