Central West’s under 14s and under 17s both claimed victories over their traditional rivals while the region’s under 12s performed strongly, but were defeated by a rampant Northern Riverina outfit.
In the eldest age group Central West skipper Nic Broes, probably more known for his exploits on the cricket field, was simply outstanding.
So much so Central West coach and Orange Tigers player Andrew Nelson – who was absolutely stoked with his side’s victory – labelled the Bathurst Giants’ talent the “best kick of a footy I’ve seen for a kid his age”.
Broes was superb in leading Central West to a 13-10-88 to 8-4-52 victory and was duly named best on ground for his effort.
Rob Mason was superb too, booting four majors.
A newcomer to the sport, Ben Matthews also kicked three for the Central West side while his Bathurst Giants club-mates Mitch Taylor and Aiden Macauley nailed two each and Bailey Brien and Jacob Molkentin both kicked a goal as well.
Ben Cattle was Northern Riverina’s best, while Wendell Kirby was strong in front of goal, nailing three majors.
Central West’s under 14 victory was even more dominant, the Casey White coached side went within one kick of keeping Northern Riverina scoreless through the entire game.
Another Bathurst Giant, Rocco Yates, was best on ground as Central West ultimately ran out 8-9-57 to 1-0-6 winners.
As the scoreline suggests, the side’s defensive effort was something to behold while it was also strong in front of goal, making the most of the opportunities created through the midfield.
Charlie Kemp was the best there, he was Central West’s only multiple goal-kicker with two while Blake Dee, Tyrone Trindall, Jake Nugent, Zac Yandle, Rocco Yates and Connor Munroe all booted one each.
Bill Dillon kicked Northern Riverina’s only major, while Zac Hanrahan was also superb in the beaten side.
Central West tried hard in the under 12s but weren’t able to stem Northern Riverina’s momentum, which Jack Crofts was largely responsible for creating.
He was named best on ground, while Orange Tigers star Matthew Brown was giving the honour for Central West.
Ashton Ross was Northern Riverina’s best in the forward-line, booting two goals to help his side to a 5-3-33 – 1-1-7 victory.
Hamish Blair was the lone goal-kicker for Central West, a side which was also well served by Arthur Locke, Jake Roberts, Tom Bock and Jess Macauley. Marc Hyland was coach of the outfit.
