That’s certainly what the green and golds want to do but it never matters if Workies are world-beaters or also-rans, CYMS captain-coach Mick Sullivan knows they’ll always turn up against the green and golds.
The rivalry’s too strong not to.
There’s never been much love lost between CYMS and Workies, the two sides faced off in a number of grand finals in recent years – 2011, 2012 and 2015 to be exact.
“That rivalry’s pretty well known,” Sullivan said.
“Not just those grand finals but also with their fall from grace last year and forfeits against us, there’s plenty there between the two clubs.
“I think Lithgow will be treating this as a very, very big game. Whether the can make the five or not, they love having bragging rights over us and I’m sure they’ll be coming over here to give it to us for 80 minutes.”
Even so, Sullivan admitted this is a game CYMS should win.
“We should win, yes, if we continue playing the way we have been,” he said.
“If we get our 50-50 of the ball and complete, then we should win. Playing the teams in the lower half of the competition, if you can get the lion’s share of possession and complete your sets most of the time you’ll get the points.
“The problem will be if we let a bit of complacency slip in and let Lithgow into the game, we’ll just have to work hard to make sure we don’t do that.”
As per usual, Lithgow strength lays through the middle third of the paddock.
“It is in their forwards, that’s where Lithgow’s strength always tends to be,” Sullivan said.
“Defensively we’ll need to be good and we’ll need to make sure we don’t give them too much field position. Workies are a side that, if you give them ball on your own line, they will barge over. So we’ll need to try and control field position.”
A big positive for CYMS is the inclusion of Bronx Goodwin, who twinged his hamstring last weekend. There was worries it was torn.
“It’s one of those things, when you’ve got a lot of scar tissue there sometimes a twinge can scare you a bit but he’s alright,” Sullivan said.
“He shifted into the centres before the Mudgee game and was our best that day, it’s a pity everyone at home didn’t get to see him in action last weekend but I’m sure he’ll put on a display this Sunday.
“He’s just starting to hit his straps.”
Sunday’s clash kicks off at 2pm.
