Race favourite Over Pure ($2.60) got out fourth fastest from the boxes in the GRNSW Pathway Stakes (450 metres) but showed plenty of determination to get her way to the front of the field.
Over Pure, trained by Orange’s Lesley Coyte, won by three and a half lengths ahead of Tameeka ($3.30). Royal Blue Haze ($13.40) was a head away in third.
Owner Annie Coyte had been desperate for some luck to finally come her runner’s way.
“It was a nice win. I’m really proud of her. Once she got into second going down the bottom I thought she could improve from there,” she said.
“She’s been a bit unlucky in her last few starts and she never seems to be able to draw a box. She had box six today. We thought that once she’d been freshened up that she’d go alright.
“I was a bit dubious at the six. I would have rather seen her start from the two or three, but she proved that she can handle it when she wants to.”
Box three starter Shania Michelle found the perfect start to lead the field around the opening turn.
Some runners almost got tangled up on the turn – something which can often happen at Bathurst’s 450m start – and Over Pure almost fell victim to it.
Shania Michelle cut across box two runner Kitboolou Pretty, who in turn contacted Over Pure.
Over Pure was able to shake off the contact and began her task of hunting down the leader.
With 200m to run it was clear Shania Michelle didn’t have the pace to hold the lead, as both Kitboolou Pretty and Over Pure quickly caught up.
Over Pure dived down the inside and carried a three length lead into the home straight.
Tameeka had followed the favourite along the rail but had far too much ground left to make up.
The winning time was 26.39 seconds.
Royal Blue Haze finished with a head full of steam and came up just shy of pinching the runner-up spot.
It’s the sixth career win in 26 starts for Over Pure and her third triumph at Kennerson Park.
Monday’s win at Bathurst ended a 10 month winless run for Coyte’s Cosmic Chief x Pure Genius bitch.
