In a battle of the youngsters in the Go The Blues 2YO Pace (1,730 metres), Our Uncle Alan ($7.80) edged ahead of Rockin With Cheri ($1.30 favourite) in his final strides to claim the upset win.
It was a case of third time lucky for the Chris Frisby-trained winner who had missed the mark in his first two career starts.
Winning driver Anthony Frisby said the Art Official x Fluorescent Lombo gelding needs an ideal pace to be run if he’s going to claim a victory.
“Halfway up the straight he just started to grind away at her. I knew halfway up the straight I could wear them down,” he said.
“That’s just him. He’ll just half-speed or full-speed for the whole time. He’s a pretty one-paced sort of bloke and the speed worked out good for him today.
“I didn’t think he’d be able to win it going into the race but it panned out well.
“He came third up at Young and I was disappointed with him. He also had two trials and he came second in both of those. As I came off the track I said we better get used to coming second because he’s got no high speed.
“If something’s sitting outside him then he’ll keep on going. He did a good job today.”
Inexperience was evident at the green light when two debut starters, Tori May and Rainbow Racer, broke.
Their wayward start effectively made it a race of five.
Rockin With Cheri also broke at the start but recovered well to get to the head of the field for Amanda Turnbull.
The field was strung out in single file at the bell. John O’Shea’s Grand Zara sat second with Our Uncle Alan in third.
That’s the way things remained until the turn for home when Frisby pulled Our Uncle Alan out of the line to draw up level with the leader.
The leading pair went stride for stride over the closing 200m before Our Uncle Alan pulled clear by a head at the winning post. The winning mile rate was 1:58.8.
Trunkey Digger ($13.50) finished third a further 16.7m away from the leading duo, winning a close battle ahead of Grand Zara ($25.50).
Bernie Hewitt fared best across Wednesday night’s meeting with three winners to his name.
The Georges Plains trainer was victorious with Crossfirehall (Bredwells Feedbarn Maiden Pace), Might And Main (Bathurst Batteries Ladyship Pace) and In The Paper (Lexus of Dubbo Pace).
