The Bathurst Community Climate Action Network (BCCAN) protest will call on the bank to rule out funding the contentious Adani Carmichael coal mine planned in Queensland.
Secretary Sally Neaves said BCCAN members would dress in white to “symbolise the bleaching of coral on the Great Barrier Reef due to warming ocean temperatures”.
“There will be ukuleles and anti-Adani songs being sung. Participants will sign letters to the Commonwealth Bank and deliver them,” Ms Neaves said.
“The action is being held to urge the bank to refrain from investing in the giant Adani coal mine in Queensland.
“Similar actions around the country caused Westpac to commit to not investing in Adani.”
Among BCCAN’s fears if the giant coal mine goes ahead are:
- An increase in emissions from burning fossil fuels such as coal that can cause global warming.
- The world is moving on from coal towards renewable energy, making this project economically doubtful in the medium to long term.
- The Adani mine will draw billions of litres of water from water basins, threatening farms and groundwater.
- Concessions being promised to Adani by the Australian Government, including a $1 billion towards rail infrastructure.
“Council and police have confirmed that they do not oppose the action as long as participants do not obstruct pedestrian flow outside the bank,” Ms Neaves said.
The protest is planned between 1pm and 1.45pm on Thursday, June 8.
