Peter Theobald had not heard the attack, but just before noon on Friday when he went to check on his recently-purchased small flock of sheep he witnessed the “horrific” ambush.
A dog had made its way onto Mr Theobald’s Walang Drive property and was viciously attacking a ram.
Already the ram’s ears had been ripped off, it had horrific facial injuries and deep gashes in its legs.
But it was not the only sheep injured or killed.
In all, two ewes were killed and a lamb born just a few days ago was missing.
Two more ewes and the ram Mr Theobald saw being attacked were euthanased due to their extensive injuries.
“It [the dog] ripped the ears off and he’s got bite wounds to the front and back legs,” he said of the ram’s injuries.
Mr Theobald has lived on the property for years and usually runs horses and goats. He said the last dog attack was around eight years ago.
He said this recent attack has left him shocked.
“I turned up and walked around the corner and said the dog attacking the ram,” Mr Theobald said.
“As soon as he [the dog] saw me he cowered down.”
Mr Theobald said he found four of the five sheep involved in the corner of his paddock.
“I was horrified, I nearly cried when I got here,” he said. “They’ve all been ripped apart.
“It’s not a feeding thing, it’s a killing frenzy.”
I turned up and walked around the corner and said the dog attacking the ram.
- Peter Theobald
Mr Theobald said he thought the dog must be a pet as it was easy to put a lead on it and put it in the shed until a Bathurst Regional Council ranger arrived.
“He’s obviously a domestic dog that’s turned into a killer,” he said.
A council ranger attended the property to take a report and seize the dog.
Mr Theobald said the dog had short fur and was mostly white in colour with a large brown patch on the right side of its face. He thought it may be a whippet .
He said a friend who owns a dog microchip scanner was able to read the dog’s chip and determine its number. This information has been passed on to council.
A council spokesperson said the matter was currently under investigation.
