Betts’ gelding won a C0 grade race for the first time when he held off challenges from Mister Stewart ($3.40 favourite) and Jimmy Wirrawee ($44.80).
Angela Hedges had to be alert in the drivers seat on Abercrombie Tab ($3.50) when Nate Braxton broke in front of her at the green light.
With that drama averted Abercrombie Tab took a sit four back on the outside line.
Half way through the final lap Betts’ gelding moved three wide for an attack on the leading runners, Mister Stewart and Bally Barfly.
Bally Barfly faded out of the hunt when he broke on the turn for home but the race’s two leading chances went stride for stride in front.
Over the final 50m Hedges and Abercrombie Tab pulled clear to win by 4.3m in a rate of 2:03.6.
The Art Major x Abercrombie Dancer gelding’s only prior success was in a restricted race at Canberra.
