Mariners picked up a goal after the break but it wasn’t enough for the visitors as they went down 2-1.
St George were able to find space behind the Mariners defence on several occasions in the opening half.
The pressure was eventually too much for the Western women as Antonia Sarikakis and Amy Bennett found the back of the net for the hosts.
Jess Salomoni scored for an improved Mariners second half team but despite creating several more chances the girls in yellow couldn’t find the valuable second goal.
“We had a really great second half and we just couldn’t get that second goal,” Salomoni said.
“I think in the second half we started to close them off because we were figuring out what they were trying to do on their long balls.
“It’s good that even though we’ve lost we can still be right up there on the table.”
St George scored a slice of revenge against the Mariners after Western won their earlier meeting this year 3-2.
Mariners have dropped back to third on the table, a point behind SD Raiders who were able to take a 2-1 win over Mount Druitt Rangers FC.
Western will face Mount Druitt next round. Last time the sides met Mariners picked up a dominant 9-1 victory.
