Now, the tank at 270A Havannah Street is nearing completion in time for the auction of its first apartment on August 3.
The massive conversion project was taken on by Keith and Sandra Hope, who bought the property in 2010.
The project had a slow start, but in November, 2015, the roof was raised and steady progress followed.
This towering beauty of architecture mixes modern taste and design with a touch of history.
From the front of the property you can see the original tank structure, which was built in 1914 to supply water to the steam trains and the Bathurst Railway workshops.
An additional structure was added during construction to the Havannah Street frontage to serve as an entryway to the building.
Apartment one takes up the right side of the structure and is split into two levels.
The main living area, kitchen and master suite are located on the top floor, along with the laundry, a separate toilet and access to the balcony.
A standout feature is the original trusses above the kitchen.
The master suite has uninterrupted views across Mount Panorama, which can be enjoyed from the bedroom itself or from the ensuite’s tub.
Downstairs, the apartment offers three more generous bedrooms with walk-in-robes, a second living area with kitchenette and a large main bathroom.
The apartment is listed with Raine and Horne real estate agent Natalie Moase, who couldn’t speak highly enough of it.
“There is just nothing like it,” she said. “It has been a labour of love. Keith and Sandra have put their hearts and souls into it and it is a credit to them.”
Other features of the property include curved walls, three car spaces for the apartment and locally-commissioned leadlight windows depicting a steam locomotive.
Private inspections can be organised by contacting Ms Moase on 0404 066 929.
The starting price for the apartment at the auction is around $950,000.
Mr Hope is also looking for original photos of the property and has asked people to come forward if they have any.
