Benjamin Gower, 23, of Patterson Place, Kelso, appeared before magistrate Michael Allen charged with a string of driving offences.
Gower is disqualified from obtaining a driver’s licence in NSW until October 2, 2021 and has been before the court on eight occasions since the beginning of the year for driving during a period of disqualification.
According to the police facts, Gower was pulled over by police on Sunday, June 4, 2017 at the 7-Eleven in Boyd Street. When he got out of the car, he began swearing at police, who advised him he was under arrest for driving offences and breaching bail.
Gower said to police: "Come on, bra [sic], can't you just give me a ticket or a warning? I’m just running the boys around.”
Police say Gower became argumentative and he resisted as officers tried to arrest him, spinning his torso and breaking free of the officer's grip.
He ran from the car park and across all four lanes of the Great Western Highway, causing a number of vehicles to brake. In doing so, police say he also endangered the lives of two officers who were running metres behind him, commanding him to stop.
Gower entered the BP service station and a campervan sales site, jumping over a railing and falling down a 20-foot drop before making off.
Police arrested Gower at his house on June 26 and he made admissions to driving.
"I didn't plan on running, it just happened," he said.
For driving a motor vehicle while disqualified (second-plus offence), he was disqualified for two years. He was also imprisoned for 10 months with a non-parole period of four months from June 26, 2017. He is eligible for release on October 25, 2017.
For escaping police custody, he was jailed for three months from June 26, and will be eligible for release on September 25, 2017.
The charge of resisting an officer in the execution of their duty was dealt with by way of a Section 10A conviction, as was the charge of entering enclosed lands.
