Wayne John Colley, 55, of the Explorers Motel in Stewart Street, appeared before visiting Magistrate Viney in Bathurst Local Court.
The court heard how Colley was walking into town on April 30 when he took a shortcut through the Quality Inn Hotel car park, noticed the door to the laundry of the motel was open and saw a handbag with a purse in it. He opened the purse and removed $180 from it.
The accused was seen in CCTV footage walking into the laundry and walking out a short time later.
On May 15, 2017, Colley was identified and participated in a notebook interview. He admitted to stealing the money and using it to buy food because he was hungry.
He was convicted and fined $400.
