The idea for a garden of healing was raised by parents at the school’s Official Apology Service of Sorrow and Hope, held back in June, with victims, and their families putting forward the idea, which was embraced by school principal, Dr Anne Wenham.
When the families said they would build the gardens themselves, if necessary, Dr Wenhan suggested the school, and victims, build it together.
On Friday, the school invited victims, their families, and the community to attend a planning discussion for the Apology Garden, on Saturday, August 19, beginning at 10.30am in the school’s Performing Arts Centre.
One parent, said she was delighted the school had embraced the idea, and said she believed it would bring closure for those still suffering.
The parent, who has already been researching ideas to bring to the discussion, said she liked the idea of peace roses for the garden, saying peace represents what most of the victims are looking for.
“The peace roses are beautiful, and significant to the victims,” she said.
The idea of having the garden on the school grounds also showed, she said the school wasn’t trying to conceal what had happened, and ensured it would never be forgotten.
Those attending the discussion are asked to RSVP by Wednesday, 16th August to Head of College Secretary: hocsec@stannies.com or 6331 4177.
