“Nighto” has been doing it tough since suffering three heavy falls at home last week which meant he would have to go into respite care for at least three weeks during his recovery.
The stay was going to set him back at least $1000 – more if recovery takes longer than expected – and that was simply money he did not have.
What Nighto did not know, though, was that his son Terry had started a GoFundMe page to give the local community the chance to help out and within days it had succeeded beyond anyone’s dreams.
Terry had set a fundraising target of $1000 but that mark was easily passed after the Western Advocate ran a story last Friday highlighting Nighto’s plight – and the total has kept growing.
When Parade checked in on the page on Monday afternoon, the total was sitting on $1810.
That’s a mark of the respect and admiration for Nighto in this town, not to mention the number of people wishing him a speedy recovery.
People can still throw in a few dollars by going to www.gofundme.com/kh96m-help-nighto.
Sports fans can sleep easy again
IT’S not only the cyclists who have endured a long three weeks during the 2017 Tour de France.
The closing stages on the 2017 tour in Paris on Sunday evening also brought an end to a late-night marathon of TV viewing for Bathurst fans of the sport.
It’s become something of an annual ritual in Bathurst for plenty of households to burn the midnight oil to follow the tour through the picturesque French countryside – even moreso since local talent Mark Renshaw has been a starter in recent years.
The tour coincides with the Wimbledon tennis tournament [though the tour runs a full week longer], giving Bathurst sports fans another reason to turn up bleary-eyed to work each July.
Parade hopes all those local cycling fans get a good night’s sleep tonight. At least it wasn’t an Ashes year.
