Transport for NSW received 78 applications from 47 organisations for the Country Passenger Transport Infrastructure Grants Scheme, with two projects successful in obtaining funding for the Bathurst electorate.
The funding will allow for improvements to be made to the guttering and shelters to be installed in Howick Street near the eastbound taxi rank.
Member for Bathurst Paul Toole made the $120,000 announcement on Tuesday alongside mayor Graeme Hanger.
“This $120,000 is going to ensure that some sheltered areas, some seating, some improvements to the access to and from this area are going to be improved,” he said.
“When we have a look at this section as well, it is quite a busy part of town. It’s an area where people are shopping, it’s where people are catching buses, where people are catching taxis, so it is important that we provide the adequate infrastructure for them to be able to do it.”
Mr Toole said the improvements would be beneficial to all members of the community, but people with disabilities and the elderly in particular.
“It is going to improve the way in which they get into taxis, onto buses in this particular precinct,” he said.
The additional shelter will also help people stay dry during wet weather and keep out of the sun during hot conditions.
Cr Hanger said council welcomed the announcement of funding and was looking forward to providing the improved infrastructure for the public.
“It is a shopping precinct and there is a doctors surgery right here, so we’ve got elderly people and we’ve got people with young children who are visiting the medical centre and it will be fantastic for them,” he said.
No date has been set for the improvements to be made to Howick Street.
Cr Hanger said council will continue to look at ways to improve public transport infrastructure in Bathurst.
