Huy Neng Ngo, 58, was killed in the car accident and NSW Police said on Friday that a fault in the airbag was the suspected cause.
“Investigations have revealed that the death of the man is likely due to a fault in the airbag, causing the man to be struck in the neck by a small fragment,” police said.
“Further investigations revealed the vehicle in the incident was subject of a worldwide recall for a faulty airbag.”
Fairfax Media reported this week that Takata airbags have now killed 18 people and injured more than 180 worldwide.
Bathurst Mazda service manager Kevin Porter said a number of makes and models have been impacted by the airbag recall.
“We’ve certainly had a very high demand from people to see if their car is covered,” he said. “Mazda have been very good in sending out letters to owners about the recall.”
Mr Porter urged Mazda owners who have not received a letter, and think they might be impacted, to call their nearest Mazda dealer.
The worldwide airbag recall was actually announced by the Australian Competition and and Consumer Commission (ACCC) on April 28 this year, however, Mr Ngo’s death has resulted in a spike of inquiries.
“A number of car recalls have been announced in Australia for Takata front passenger and driver airbags. There have been injuries and deaths from faulty Takata airbags,” the ACCC announcement said.
“If car owners have concerns, they should contact their local dealership or the manufacturer of the vehicle.”
Bathurst Automotive Group general manager Tim Smith said the recall had been ongoing for some time.
“We’re more than willing to help people with our brands whether they are affected or not,” he said.
“If the vehicle’s affected, we’ll get the airbag replaced and we’re more than happy to check any vehicle.”
Mr Smith said owners of Nissan, Honda or Subaru vehicles who are impacted by the recall, or think they may be, are encouraged to call the Bathurst Automotive Group service centre on 6338 2000.
