It was for a good reason.
Mrs Browns Boy ($1.20 favourite) peeled out four wide on the turn for home in the $10,000 Club Menangle Where Horses Fly Heat (1,730 metres) and blitzed by the leaders to record a comfortable win.
A second row start was the only concern for the Amanda Turnbull gelding, but when he was able to get to the one out and two back position he was in the clear.
Leaders The Only Child and Taylor Hood had no answer when Mrs Browns Boy went clear with 200m to run.
Turnbull’s gelding picked up a fifth straight win, coming in a 1:56.1 mile rate.
Mrs Browns Boy was able to relax over the closing 50m and maintain his unbeaten record in Australia.
Bernie Hewitt filled out the top three with a fast-finishing Lethal Promise ($16.40, 5.6 metres behind) and Taylor Hood ($9.40, 10.4m).
“When they went so hard early on that was the best thing for him. It worked out perfectly,” Turnbull said of her Kiwi runner’s effort.
“Every time he steps out he’s getting better and better. He’s pretty exciting at home, so hopefully he can keep it going.
“The races he’s been in have suited him. He’s been able to go with a sit, and he is more of a sit-and-sprinter. In his first ever start he had to sit in the death, and he didn’t like that very much.
“Confidence is a big thing too. He’s getting a lot of that now after he’s been winning so easily.”
The $25,000 final will be run on August 26.
